Topic: "Blue water Navy":-Why It Is Necessity For India: Blue Water Navy
Once India's former Prime Minister Jawahar lal Nehru had said
"To be safe on land, we must be supreme at sea". Much has been said
about the Indian Navy's blue water aspirations over time. However a number of experts
have already described the Indian Navy as being a blue-water navy and the
intentions of developing blue-water capabilities were outlined under the 2007
Maritime Capabilities Perspective Plan.
Since the late 1990's India’s attempt to strengthen its maritime
status has gathered decisive pace. This all involves India’s drive, seen in its
2006 Navy Day of “transforming itself from a "Brown Water" coastal
defence force to a formidable "Blue Water” fleet. It reflects the Indian
Navy’s own 2003 slogan, and play on words, of Tacking to the Blue Waters.
Hence, The Term Blue Water Navies denotes such navies that have
an international focus. They function in the deep waters (blue) across the
globe. In the contemporary world, carrier battle groups of the US Navy and
atomic-powered submarines best embody the concept.
Why It Is Necessity For India-
Almost unnoticed by the rest of the world, India has built one of the largest and most powerful navies in the world with an indication towards major possibilities of further growth. It has 2 conventional Aircraft carriers, 1 amphibious transport dock, 50 Frigates, Destroyers and Corvettes one nuclear-powered and 14 conventionally-powered attack submarines and a many other naval ships including around 100 armed patrol ships with the Indian Coast Guards. However, there exist a number of drivers for further expanding its influence at sea.

New Delhi has been growing uneasy about Beijing’s perceived
‘String Of Pearls' strategy in the Indian Ocean. Some see this as encirclement
by China’s strategic alliances and building of maritime facilities in Sri
Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. With China developing its own Blue Water Navy. India aims to not only secure its own territory but also be able to
project power farther than its shores.
The purpose of a Blue water force is generally not considered
just ensuring that one nation is protected, but to ensure global security and
stability, as well as protecting global trade lanes such as Anti Piracy Operations and Partnership Building Exercise with other major navies in the
region. Hence, Blue Water navy is Power Projection which is necessary
for a Power like India.
Area of Thrust and the future –
India has transformed itself into a self-sufficient navy and the
future lies in developing indigenous platforms, systems, sensors and weapons as
part of the nation's modernization and expansion plan.
Rabindra Nath Tagore Said, "You Can Not Cross The Sea Merely By
Standing and Staring At The Water".
Thus,The road ahead for the Indian Navy's true Blue Water
aspiration requires time-bound completions and proper policy framework. With India's rapid growth, the Navy has a much bigger role to
play now, much more to contribute to the nation's strength. India is a Blue Water Navy in the Making, not a True Blue Water Naval Power. Hence, New Delhi
needs at least 5 more aircraft-carriers out of which 3 should be
nuclear-powered, Dependency on MIG-29K for its carrier can be understood for
now but India should also look and invest in a new indigenously developed
carrier based fighter so that it can move from STOBAR to CATOBAR system and
that fighter should have an extended range of around 3500 kms.
At the same time, both Indian and Chinese
navies are actively building ‘blue water’ capabilities--
An ability to carry out operations much farther than their
territorial boundaries, across the deep oceans. As India juggles the dual
imperative to simultaneously befriend and hedge against an economically and
militarily rising China, the outcome of its blue water quest will influence the
balance of power in Asia for years to come.
As It Is Rightly Said. Individually We Are One Drop, together We
are an Ocean. Thus, A blue water navy would provide muscle for all these
strategic imperatives, enhance regional power projection capabilities, more
effectively protect India’s expanding energy and trade routes, and enable
stronger defense and trade ties with other nations.
The men in white are the ones responsible to safeguard coastal
boundaries around India and are the very reason we sleep peacefully. Their
never ending determination will always ensure a safe and bright future for
India. No wonder there are a million Indians waiting to join the Indian Navy.Thank you friends, all the best.
